some time when you really need it.

Tips
Hints
  1. Always remember to disconnect your garden hose from the hose bib and cover the spigot with a foam cover to protect it from freezing. Disconnecting the hose from the spigot will prevent any chance of the hose holding water which could cause a freeze and a hose bib burst.
  2. Always make sure you know where the main water and gas shutoff to the residence is. Make sure everyone living in the residence knows about the water and gas shut off locations. You never know when a emergency could happen always be prepared.
  3. When leaving your residence for any length of time its a good idea to shut off any unnecessary valves serving fixtures and appliences such as the kitchen sink, the bathroom sinks, toilets and a really important one is the washing machine.
  4. Nuts or bolts in real tight places can often be freed with a flat screw driver and a hammer.
  5. A little motor oil spread on your hand tools when not being used will make them last along time for future use when needed.
  6. While working over open drains it is a good idea to put a rag or something in the drain to stop a accidental loss of parts, screws or tools down the drain.
  7. For stubborn bolts or screws a little heat will help loosen it. If that does not work I use a Craftman screw extracing kit. I carry the full extractor kit so I am covered no matter what size fasenter I am trying to get out. Sears #00952157000 Order it from the SEARS ad on this page and get a extra discount.
  8. If you lubricate the stem or cartridge before installing it. It will have a smooth action and will last much longer.
  9. When reinstalling faucets stems after repair always make sure they are in the off position before installing the stem. Parts can be damaged as the stem is inserted in the valve.
  10. In weather below freezing a light bulb in a pump house or an out building where there is plumbing can prevent a costly pipe burst. It really does not take much heat to keep pipes from freezing.
  11. As a precaution every six months to a year. Go around to all the sinks in the home and tighten all the slip joint nuts on the drains. They often loosen up in time and this will stop any mold or rot from forming.
  12. For a really stubborn pipe use two pipe wrenches on the pipe and one on the fitting. This will provide much more leverage than one wrench.
  13. When you need to determine a location in a ceiling for a pipe penetration use a plumb bob to get the exact place to drill.
  14. After applying teflon tape to pipe threads apply a thin layer of some pipe dope. This guarantees that you will not have a leak when every thing is put back togather.
  15. By having your hot water tank serviced on a yearly basis you can add five to ten years to the life of the hot water tank. Services can consist of as little as a good flushing and inspection, but you may want to replace internal and electrical parts every three years or so.
  16. Allways have a wet/dry vacuum cleaner availble to clean up your work area. Often its just some wall board dust or plastic shaving. But you never know when an emergancy may happen so allways be prepared.
  17. One of the keys to soldering is the torch. Many torches sold at hardware stores and home centers lack the temperature to properly solder a joint. If you plan on soldering fitting yourself it will pay off to get a high qaulity torch. They can be purchaced at tool stores like Northern Tool ( There is a advertisement in the top right corner of this and every web page on this site for Norther Tool. They truly are a wonderful store and not just tools.) and plumbing wholesalers in your area.
  18. Another great idea to stop feeezing pipes is heat tape. They plug into your electrical outlets and keep pipes warm and safe from freezing in the winter.

  1. If no fixtures are needed while you are gone shut off the electric or gas to the hot water tank and then just shut down the whole system at the main water shut off.
  2. Plumbing lubrication can be purchaced in your local hardware store or plumbing wholesale store. Never use a lubrication that is not recommended for potable water.
  3. Most valves can be repaired with some teflon packing placed in the bonnet or seat.
  4. When repairing a valve . Layout your plumbing parts in the order you take them out. Then your new ones should go back in trouble free.
  5. Most valve company's have break down diagrams of there products availble.
